American teenagers are having less sex, using more protection and that’s resulting in fewer pregnancies. The teenage pregnancy rate, which rose sharply between 1986 and 1991, has declined steadily for a decade. While contraception efforts have focused largely on girls, boy’s behavior has changed most. More than half of male high school students said they were virgins in 2001, compared to 39 percent this year.
For sexually active males, condom use has risen to 65 percent. Delays in first intercourse and better contraception have contributed to a 35 percent reduction in birth rates among 15 to 17-year-olds, experts say. “From the ground up, kids are getting quite different signals from the signals that were there 25 years ago,” said Frank Furstenberg, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania.
The fear of AIDS, the impact of AIDS prevention education, changes in welfare laws and the crackdown on fathers for child support, and sex education that includes abstinence and contraception are among the factors influencing teenagers. The data is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Alan Guttmacher Institute and the Child Trends Databank.
Teen pregnancy could be considered a problem, I certainly see it as children having children. I am only 18 years old abd I do not care to be a parent at this time. I want to be out of college and hopefully married before I begin a family. I am not ready to be a parent and I need to grow up myself. I actually know a few guys who are virgins and they dont have a problem with saying so. On the other hand I kow a few virgin guys who can't wait to loose it and they are only 15 years old. I don't see why there is a need to rush into sex. Condoms are not ideal in a sexual experience so the best option would be to marry the person. If you marry the person birth control is available that last for years and is safe as long as you and your partner are honest with each other. For any couple there are birth control pills which protects you as long as you take them correctly. I really think that some girls fel their life would be better with a baby but the rest of the girls with sense see that to have a child you need stability. A home and a doctor for your child, a good job and a car to get around in. Some feel all you need is love, if that is the case I hope tat love can pay the babies insurance and buy clothes for the child. Now teen pregnancy it more talked about and I think that is an issue as well. With more education , girls can be more careful and they are not as ignoran as they were in the 80's about teen pregnancy.
