One of the risks of being an adult movie performer is having Sexually Transmitted Infections. Even though the Californian government has encouraged routine medical check-up for those who involved in the industry, cases like Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infections are still increasing.
Such types of infections are the most common ones among porn stars. The estimated annual risk for Chlamydia was at least 14 percent while Gonorrhea was 5 percent. These percentages are based on assumptions regarding the number of adult film performers who work in Los Angeles County, and appeared higher for female performers.

For some porn actors and actresses, experiencing these infections is actually not something new to them. About 26 percent have had this disease for at least twice or more since the risk of re-infections would likely occur. Especially for female actresses, the risks are even 25 percent higher.
According to Binh Y Goldstein, the industry standards for protecting adult film performers lag far behind established worker health and safety standards. Goldstein and colleagues of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health have made a study regarding this matter and called for additional occupational safety measures – especially condom use – to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections.

Adult movie industries have normally encouraged their actors and actresses to check their sexual and reproduction health every 30 days. They must be reported as free from all kinds of sexually transmitted infections within the previous 30 days of work.
But according to Goldstein, as there is no obligation for them to wear protections like condom, they are still prone to infections and the number of this case will keep increasing.
There are about 2,000 to 3,000 porn stars working in California today, with about 200 production companies in the city. Most of these companies are not requiring the use of condom to their employees.
